John 14:16 And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Counsellor to be with you forever.
I like study bibles. The one I have in footnotes for this verse says "Counsellor or Helper or Advocate. It is a legal term, but with broarder meaning than 'counsel for the defense' It referred to anyone who helped someone in trouble with the law."
If we try to keep the law of God & focus on obeying rules & commands, even the 10 commandments, we get "in trouble with the law". We are meant to live in relationship.
The more we focus on commands the more we will break them. Rom 5:20a Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound
Let's stay out of "trouble with the law" & focus on our relationship with God through the Son by the Spirit & let's leave the law to the Counsellor.
Gal 5:18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.
